Greens sue EPA over toxic chemical rules

[A recently-passed law required the EPA to make some changes but the courtroom claim is that they "watered down the rules and weakened the chemical review process compared to the proposed regulations issued by the Obama administration." I think it will surprise no one if this proves true; the issue is whether it was legal or not. *RON*]

Several environmental groups are challenging new chemical safety regulations issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The groups sued the EPA on Monday over rules, published in July, that determine which uses of chemicals the agency will assess before allowing the chemicals to be sold on the open market.

A chemical safety law passed last year requires the EPA to update several internal procedures related to the risk evaluation process for toxic chemicals.

But in their lawsuit Monday, the groups said the agency watered down the rules and weakened the chemica…

[Millions consumed potentially unsafe water in the last 10 years. This entire "Troubled Water" series of reports is excellent and well worth a look. *RON*]
Agnel Philip, Elizabeth Sims, Jordan Houston and Rachel Konieczny | News21, 14 August 2017 WOLFFORTH, Texas – As many as 63 million people – nearly a fifth of the country – from rural central California to the boroughs of New York City, were exposed to potentially unsafe water more than once during the past decade, according to a News21 investigation of 680,000 water quality and monitoring violations from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The findings highlight how six decades of industrial dumping, farming pollution, and water plant and distribution pipe deterioration have taken a toll on local water systems. Those found to have problems cleaning their water typically took more than two years to fix these issues, with some only recently resolving decades-old violations of EPA s…

B.C. Bans Trophy Hunting Grizzly Bears: Hunters get one more shot this season.

["B.C. Green party Leader Andrew Weaver said while the ban is encouraging, it doesn't fully end the hunt which environmental groups had wanted.... He said the government should take a more science-based approach to species management and he is calling for the introduction of endangered species legislation, which the province currently lacks." *RON*]
Canadian Press, Huffington Post, 14 August 2017
VICTORIA — Killing grizzly bears for trophy will come to an end in British Columbia, but not before hunters get one more shot this season.

Natural Resource Operations Minister Doug Donaldson said the province is moving to ban trophy hunting for grizzly bears and will completely ban the hunting of grizzlies in the Great Bear Rainforest as of Nov. 30.

But the current season that begins in some parts of the province this week is set to go ahead, Donaldson said, because hunting permits were already issued months ago.

"The main factor was the…

Trudeau gives billions to questionable energy projects while withholding funding for Indigenous children

["Prime Minister Trudeau's funding decisions are hypocritical, pure and simple." *RON*]
Hans Rollman,, 14 August 2017

Want to get a few billion dollars from Justin Trudeau? All you need is to be a white-settler-dominated provincial government, with a haphazard plan to build an energy mega-project and no demonstrated track record of being able to do anything of the sort (in fact, a track record of repeated failures).

What you don't want to be: an Indigenous government trying to help your children.

This summer, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that before increasing funding for Indigenous children -- as basically ordered to do by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal in January 2016 -- he wants them to prove they have the capacity to use the money that they've been begging for. "A lot of Indigenous communities haven't had the opportunity yet to take that responsibility, to actually think about how they can and …

Pesticides could wipe out bumblebee populations, study shows

[Evidence continues to accumulate that Monsanto is slowly but surely bringing on the end of the world. It would be funny if we kept fighting about climate change until this got us! Neonicotinoid drastically cuts egg-laying by queens, affecting their ability to start new colonies and increasing chances of local extinction, say scientists. *RON*]

Press Association, The Guardian, 14 August 2017
A controversial pesticide can potentially wipe out common bumblebee populations by preventing the formation of new colonies, research has shown.

The neonicotinoid chemical thiamethoxam dramatically reduces egg-laying by queen bumblebees, say scientists.

Predictions based on a mathematical model suggest this could result in the total collapse of local populations of the wild bees.

Lead researcher Professor Nigel Raine, from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, said: “Bumblebee queens that were exposed to the neonicotinoid were 26% less likely to lay eggs …
