[An ideological translator ring for the federal budget. Media bias/Fact check: factual reporting high, moderate to high liberal bias. This also serves as a guide on how to read other stories on the budget, e.g., Federal Budget 2017: 5 Things To Look For ("Will the government provide a timeline to bring the country's books to balance?"). *RON*]

When I joined the Department of Finance in Ottawa in 1966, the government budget was run off on a Gestetner duplicating machine in a large room not far from my office.

Budget day 2017 is a huge media and public relations event, as it has been for many years. In the run up, opinion formation is a priority for big accounting and law firms, banks, and corporate lobby…

[The religious right wants to MAWA - Make American White Again! How did Donald Trump—a thrice-married, biblically illiterate sexual predator—hijack the religious right? Fact Check rating: New Republic has high factual reporting with a medium to high liberal bias. *RON*]

Back in August 2015, when Donald Trump’s presidential ambitions were widely considered a joke, Russell Moore was worried. A prominent leader of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, Moore knew that some of the faithful were falling for Trump, a philandering, biblically illiterate candidate from New York City whose lifestyle and views embodied everything the religious right professed to abhor. The month before, a Washington Post poll had found that Trump was already being backed by more white evangelicals than any other Republican candidate.

[Good piece on the 'humanitarian crisis' in Chad and elsewhere in Africa. "As millions suffer from hunger, disease, illiteracy and grinding poverty in the Lake Chad region of West Africa, a game of resource extraction and exploitation is playing out, with geopolitics at the heart of it all." Eric Draitser, Mint Press News, 20 March 2017

NEW YORK — (Analysis) In late February 2017, Norway hosted an international humanitarian conference on Nigeria and the Lake Chad region in hopes of attracting major donors to fund relief work. As Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende explained, “The conference has three aims: to raise awareness about the crisis, to gain more support for humanitarian efforts, and to secure greater political commitment to improve the situation.”
