Republicans and Wall Street Say To Hell With Protecting the Public!

[An excellent supplement to the article on Jamie Dimon's lying whining noises. Since December, Congress has twice passed measures to weaken regulations in the Dodd-Frank financial law that are intended to reduce the risk of another financial meltdown. *RON*]

In the last election cycle, Wall Street banks and financial interests spent over $1.2 billion on lobbying and campaign contributions, according to Americans for Financial Reform. Their spending strategy appears to be working. Just this week, the House passed further legislation that would delay by two years some key provisions of Dodd-Frank. “[Banks] want to be able to do things their way, and that’s very dangerous.” MIT economist Simon Johnson tells Bill.

“‘Here we go again’ — I think that’s exactly the motto, or the bumper sticker for this Congress. It’s crazy, it’s unconscionable, but that is the reality.”

Lawmakers are pinning these …

Slimin’ Jamie Dimon Tells Howlers About Persecution of Banks, “Fortress Balance Sheet”

[More on the current practice of Goebbels' Big Lie Theory from that whiny entitled guy, liar, bully, and inveterate law-breaker Jamie Dimon. *RON*]
By Yves Smith, Naked Capitalism, January 18, 2015

Jamie Dimon seems to think if he can tell his Big Lies long enough, he’ll be believed. In reality, the only ones who will buy his blather are his fellow members of the elite banker looting classes and their hired help.

Dimon’s latest opportunity to play Ministry of Truth came in an analysts’ call last week, when he tried presenting JP Morgan and banks generally as “under assault”. This was so patently ridiculous that it quickly elicited the scorn it deserved. For instance, from DS Wright at Firedoglake:
Remember that time the US government broke up all the Too Big To Fail banks and prosecuted bankster executives for the crimes that brought down the financial markets in 2008? Me neither. Yet JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon is caterwauling to the media about …

Arthur Porter To Be Extradited To Canada From Panama To Face Charges

[Note well that this article does not say 'peep' about the fact that this is the man that Stephen Harper appointed "head of the Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC) on Sept. 3, 2008, giving him access to Canada’s most carefully guarded secrets, including information shared with Canadian spies by American and British intelligence agencies." See Letter warning Stephen Harper against appointing Arthur Porter to oversee spy agency raised no red flags. *RON*]

MONTREAL - A Quebec police source has confirmed that the former head of the McGill University Health Centre will be extradited to Canada from Panama.

Arthur Porter faces fraud-related charges in connection with an alleged bribery scandal related to a super hospital project in Montreal.

The source tells The Canadian Press it is not known when exactly Porter will return to Canada.

The source added that Porter can still …

More Stringent Oversight Of Military Intelligence At DND In Limbo

[So, in this report we discover that a dedicated independent review of the Canadian National Defense's intelligence functions will probably be deemed too expensive to implement. Quelle surprise. My first thought was "You mean there isn't any now?!" It must be nice for Harper now that we have more security agencies than you can shake a stick at. If mom won't give him what he wants, he can just go ask dad. *RON]

OTTAWA - National Defence has been looking at ways to introduce more stringent oversight of its intelligence operations, but "fiscal restraint" may prevent the department from implementing the preferred option.

A series of internal documents and slide presentations, obtained by The Canadian Press under access-to-information legislation, show the head of defence intelligence ordered the exhaustive, independent review — which was conducted …

Putin’s Gambit and the Future of Ukraine

[This reminds me of Douglas Adams' description of the Somebody Else's Problem (SEP) field as the practical solution to the problem of how to render something invisible. "The Somebody Else's Problem field is much simpler and more effective, and what's more can be run for over a hundred years on a single torch battery. This is because it relies on people's natural disposition not to see anything they don't want to, weren't expecting, or can't explain." - Douglas Adams, Life, the Universe and Everything. Just like Nigeria, the entire Western press corp seems determined to ignore events in Southern Ossetia like crazy. *RON*]

Throughout the Russia-Ukraine conflict, I’ve referred to the “Georgia precedent”: the idea that Russia’s invasion of Georgia in 2008 showed Vladimir Putin how much he could get away with in terms of violating the sovereignty of neighboring countries…

Protesters hurl eggs, shoes at John Baird's convoy

[Globally, Canada has become part of the problem. A political sea-change is needed if we are to begin to become part of the solution once again, as we used to be in the 1960s and 1970s. It is absolutely untrue that "Canada and Israel share similar views on the world stage." It is only true that Harper and Netanyahu share similar views. *RON*]

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Dozens of Palestinian protesters in Ramallah hurled eggs and shoes at the convoy of Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird.

Baird travelled to the West Bank city today to meet with Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki.

The protesters held signs reading: "Baird you are not welcome in Palestine."
Media reports say Baird was not hit.
